Schengen visa: EU Commission launches Visa Code reform – draft law expected early 2027
· · Visa & Relocation Agentur
On 8 September 2026 the Commission opened its consultation. Under discussion: EU-wide surcharges on the fee, easier procedures for business travellers and new restriction mechanisms. Nothing changes until then.
Key facts
Status: preparatory phase (call for evidence of 8 September 2026); legislative proposal expected in Q1 2027.
Still in force: Schengen visa C €90 (children 6–12: €45), standard processing 15 days, application at the earliest 6 months before travel.
Under discussion: harmonised surcharges, faster procedures for business travellers, the option to restrict visa issuance for certain countries.
The EU-wide digital application platform and the digital visa as a 2D barcode are adopted and being rolled out in stages.
None of this applies today – applications proceed unchanged.
What it is about
Since 2009 the Visa Code has governed how Schengen visas are applied for, examined and issued. The Commission wants to adapt it: EES and ETIAS are running, applications are to go digital, and several member states want more room to use visa policy as a political lever.
What matters for applicants
Nothing in the short term. Medium term, likely: a single online application for all Schengen states instead of 27 national portals, higher total costs through surcharges, but more predictable timelines for business travellers with a travel history. We are following the consultation and will update this item.
Our advice
If you need a Schengen visa in the next 12 months, apply under today’s rules – they are known and stable. A clean travel history (timely departures, no refusals) is the best asset for future facilitations such as multi-year visas.
FAQ
Will the Schengen visa cost more in 2027?
Possibly, but not decided. Currently €90; surcharges are part of the consultation, a draft law is expected in early 2027.
Can I already apply for a Schengen visa online?
The EU platform is being rolled out in stages; until it is live for your destination, applications continue via the national visa centre.
