Connecting via London, USA, Canada, China – when a visa is needed.
What it is
Schengen: airport transit visa A only for a few countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, partly Turkey). UK: Direct Airside Transit Visa £35 or Visitor in Transit £64 for visa nationals, exemptions with a valid US/Canadian visa. USA: no transit without a visa or ESTA (C visa or B1/B2). Canada: transit visa free, or eTA. China: 240-hour visa-free transit in 60 cities for 55 countries.
Common mistakes
Booking a US connection without ESTA/visa; London transit with terminal change (then landside, Visitor in Transit needed); bags must be re-checked at Heathrow – entry required.
